Anthony's Nose

Hike Date: August 21, 2010

Hike Difficulty: Moderate

Hike Rating (Scenic views or/and interesting terrain/vegetation): A+

Hike Description: This excursion followed the route for the Anthony's Nose hike described in the book: AMC's Best Day Hikes in the Catskills and Hudson Valley. It was also the first hike I did with my parents in this area while they were visiting me in 2010. That, coupled with the incredible vantage point afforded by the rocky ledges near the summit, has made this a very memorable hike for me.  To get there, we took the Short Line bus from the Port Authority Bus Terminal to Bear Mt. State Park. From Bear Mt. Inn, we followed the white-blazed Appalachian Trail through the zoo, over Bear Mt. bridge (the sweeping north-facing views from the bridge suffice alone to make this bridge walk worthwhile), turned left and walked along the shoulder of Route 9D to a marked trailhead, and thence much of the way up Anthony's Nose. At the intersection with blue-blazed Camp Smith trail, we switched to the latter (since the AT bypasses the summit) and made our way further up.  Finally getting to the rocky ledges known Engagement Rock, a panoramic view revealed itself. Across the river lie Bear Mountain, Hessian Lake and Popolopen Creek. Just below lies the span of Bear Mt Bridge. Looking in a southerly direction, one can see Dunderberg and marshlands.  We found a place to sit, and admired the view as well as had lunch, prior to retracing our route on the way back.
