Ruinaulta: Versam-Safien to Valendas-Sagogn

Date: May 21, 2016

Location: Graubünden, Switzerland

I was in Zurich for work and had a weekend on my hands. What better way to spend it than hiking!

It was a sunny Saturday when I caught the train from Zurich HB for Chur, the capital city of the canton of Graubünden, with the intent of doing a short hike in the Swiss Rhine Gorge, or Ruinaulta. Getting there 1.5 hours later, I first took the RHB train to Reichenau-Tamins where I wanted to check out the confluence of the Vorderrhein and the Hinterrhein, which is a short walk from the station. I got a few decent photographs but otherwise, it is not particularly outstanding.

Walking back to the station, I caught the next train to the tiny station of Versam-Safien where I started out on a short hike along the Gorge on the Trans-Ruinaulta trail.

I am guessing these are remnants of the Flims rockslide that occurred 10K years ago

Trans Ruinalta Trail Sign

I stopped for lunch at a spot with a trailside bench and with a sign marked 'Schwarzes Lech'. The view from here was gorgeous!

The track and the river are constant companions

Wildflowers all over!

The water was quite clear and the rocks on the bed made for a pretty sight

The endpoint of my hike

From Valendas-Sagogn, I took the next train to Ilanz, where I got a train back to Chur, and thence to Zurich.
