This is the second of a series of posts on hikes and strolls undertaken during a 5-day CA road trip.
Date: September 1, 2017
Location: Lassen Volcanic National Park
Lassen Peak is the summit of Mt. Lassen which last erupted in 1915. The volcano is now dormant, and it is a relatively easy one to hike, climbing ~2000 ft from 8500 ft. to 10,457 ft. in 2.5 miles to make for a 5 mile roundtrip. Along with Bumpass Hell, this is a signature Lassen hike which I had to forego in my brief visit last year, but which I was able to undertake this time.
Early stretch of the trail - the peak beckons |
Lovely view of peaks |
Lake Helen |
The steep second half of the hike begins |
Volcanic formations called "spines" |
Lake Helen again |
The last half mile begins |
Almost there - just a tiny snow field and then a mad scramble over loose unstable rocks! |
A well-worn trail through the snowfield |
After a rock scramble, finally the summit |
Looking back at the rocks through which I climbed to get to the summit |
Lake (??) in the distance |
